I would say lichen. It takes the longest to come off!

They are both a pain in the you know what, but the lichen seems to lay pretty flat on the shingles like gum on a sidewalk and tends to take longer to come off. Like Art said though, both take more SH than just plain old gloeocaspa and even takes a second application just for good measures.

Well I am leaning towards GLOEOCAPSA MAGMA and I will tell you why. We all know that when the Lichen and moss is dead it turns white and a second coat is always a good idea on a large build up. I have two reasons for my theory. First is I went back to two homes,I always try to drive by homes that I have cleaned to make sure they are perfect.. These two roofs were very black and a good amount of Lichen and moss. When we left it looked fine, but when I drove by they were not perfect. I got out a ladder and went up, the lichen was dead very brittle so I knew my mix was good. But the roof had a slight discolor to it, like a shadow. We resprayed the roof and it cleared up right away it was GLOEOCAPSA MAGMA faintly still alive. So I figured I had a bad batch the day of the job. Reason #2 happened today, Ed from Jersey sent us some nice rain. This morning cleaning a roof we were caught with a light drizzle, the Lichen died right away but the GLOEOCAPSA MAGMA just wouldnt let go, it took several coats. I know Lichen and moss take time to come off but it seems GLOEOCAPSA MAGMA maybe the harder to kill of the three.

I know we struggle with the white color shingles.I have sprayed some of them 4 times, so I would think that if it is stained bad it is tougher to get cleaned.

We have gone back a time or two to retreat some of the darker stains caused by Goeocapsa Magma. It has been helpful to look at the roof with polarized sun glasses after they are sprayed. Sometime when we think the stains a all gone, the polarized lens make you see spots that were not completely removed in the initial spray.

I'm voting Gleoscapsa magma. The darker the stain, the harder it is to remove.

Ok so just to be clear. Are we saying that if there is any darkness that remains to the GM that it is still alive? Some definitions of GM are that the darkness is an exterior uv protection. Some say the darkness is the exterior of the GM decomposing (dead already)
It would surprise me if a bath in our juice did not kill it. Seems to me the extra coats would really just be to oxidize the cantankerous darkness.

I find brown staining left behind by GM is dead and waiting for rain. I have to get a pair of those sunglasses to spot any GM that is still black when done. If it's still black when your done and you leave I think you will be back. I think if its still there on a darker roof and you don't see it and leave it will probably be back strong in a few monts time.

I find that orange lichen is the hardest to kill and have come off. It will hang on longer than the green lichen. Also, it seems to be that it grows only at the peak of roofs. Hard to get at on some very steep roofs if it needs to be rinsed off.

You're right Dave, this stuff is a bitch to get get off the roof. Almost every job this year here in Eastern PA has this orange lichen.
