Happy new year to the NSWA. My wife and our boys are moving to a small town near New Bern NC . We are going to be house parents for a Christian home for Children in Crisis. That being said this area is already spoken for with Mr Sulivans awesome cedar roof biz offering.  2-3 days a week I will be doing roof & exterior cleaning. Does any body clean cedar roof and could help me with the process thanks in advance.

Pre wet the wood. Treat it with a 2-3 % solution. Let dwell. Then rinse using a garden hose with a jet or stream tip. When done treat with an oxalic acid at 12 ounces to 1 gallon of water and apply to cedar. Make sure the shake is not brittle or mushy. If so the replacement is the best option. If moss is present you just have to soak it with more solution. Letting it dwell is the important part. Never spray bleach on dry wood.

 William,

Bruce may or may not read this but here is the real deal. He DID NOT, overnight figure out cedar roof cleaning. I can tell you or others the hours of conversation I had with him concerning this subject as he was "fine tuning". Integrity? He sold his "special" cedar cleaning process you a young man very close to me and didn't say one word to me because money talks.

Mike gave you the answer... Bruce charges a lot for that!

I didn't think they had many cedar roofs in Fla. Cedar roof cleaning is easy and good coinage.

I'm not sure what's the question.  Are you looking to market to homes with cedar and metal roofs?

Go create an account on Merchant Circle. They give you a free blog section. Write an article titled "Cedar Roof Cleaning Jacksonville, Fla., phone#". Write an informative 300 word piece about cedar roof cleaning, the benefits, the pitfalls. Then do it again for another town. Then do it again for metal roofing for a town, then another town. All easier said then done.

Have any cedar guys used the "Wood Restore" from AC as the final neutralizing step in addition to or instead of oxalic acid?

We have used it on a wood garden barn and a beautiful wood arbor and swing set.

I liked the results but you guys have the expertise on cedar roofs.

We have a few big dollar homes with cedar shakes I want to restore in our town.

We use on cedar shake roofs. We don't restore, just clean. I figure it can only help. We promote that it will neutralize any bleach residue and provide some additional re-hydrating as well as mold/mildew resistance. Its really hard to quantify the results and tell by the way the finished cleaned roof looks because all of the roofs look a bit different when done and they all look so much better than the "before" It helps with some of my clients that say they want the roof sealed and I explain why we don't seal. I think they just want an "after" or "finishing" product sprayed on when done to make them feel better.

Thank you for the input. I misused the word restore. You answered what I wanted to know about the end result look versus oxalic acid. I will do some side by side comparisons

Steve,

I like the results of Wood Restore and how easy it is to use. Plus it is very safe to handle. I have been using it for almost a year now and did some initial testing for AC, in the field. Depending on the size of the job, we use anything from a pump sprayer or a Gilmour 362 hose end sprayer. It works great for large decks and for cedar roofs. You just dial in the ounces per gallon you want it to apply. We use the one once per gallon setting. Here are a few pics of of stuff we did with Wood Restore. If you look close at the Mahogany deck pics you can see the foaming purple color of the Wood Restore. It dries clear just to clarify. The purple color is some of the UV inhibitors marker tints showing when wet.

This is an excellent way to get it cleaned. Especially on cedar roofs that are just black with algae and mold. What would you say do when the roof has tons of growth on it? Would you spend time rinsing each shake thoroughly to get it all off or would you just make sure it's all dead then spray it with oxalic and let the rain do the rest? Thoroughly rinsing sometimes can take days. I've uploaded some photos for examples.20141201_111837.jpgAfter Cedar 3.jpgCedar Before X.JPGIMG_0448.JPG

 Josh,

I thought you bought into Bruce Sullivan's Network? Doesn't he have an opinion on what to do?
