When needed protection respirators of some sort are needed.

There are some posts on FB about what to use. One is a 3M R95 which I haven't researched yet and another is 3M 8567 and the other 3M 6200.

We prefer the 3M 8567 since is is full of charcoal and has the exhalation valve and can be reused as long as it's not getting loaded with sweat. The crews prefer this on over any rubber in high heat since the sweat and rubber tends to be troublesome. I spent some time researching the masks and feel like 3m 8567 WILL DO JUST FINE, especially since we are outside.

Thoughts?

The 3M 8567 looks like it will suffice. I dont like the half mask or the rubber either. Especially if you wear glasses it fogs them up.

those charcoal ones are good for things like latex odor, and may stave off some of the smell, but not enough charcoal to scrub the chlorine gas that can be harmful.

the half face marks with "cool-flow" work great for not fogging up glasses, exhalant breath vents fully under the mask.

check em out

We are not in confined spaces so that makes a big difference. The only time you really get it is when walking a roof on a hot day.

Here is what 3M says about the 8567. They are not just for odor.

"Recommended applications may include glass etching, chemical processing, paper processing, aluminum smelting, and brewing operations in which particles and nuisance levels of acid gases such as sulphur dioxide, hydrogen fluoride, and/or chlorine may be present."

This is the face shield PAsoftwash has been using for two years. I like the fact it can be unlatched and dropped down with ease.

Need to make a quick phone call? Need to gently admonish a ground tech? Need to visit with a customer? Very easy to do. Latch it back up and spray away.

I was not aware it was available at home depot.  That should make getting them easier.

Steve,

My guys love these. We have been using them for 2 seasons now and they are easy to get...Home Depot. The initial cost is around 60 buck, but the refills are like 18 bucks. My guys usually get a couple weeks out of a fresh one.

Brett: The one you recommend is rated for OG (organic vapors) which is what SH and dead dying algae is putting off. I'd say it does;t offer the safe safety factor as a P100/OV/AG (100% filtration, organic vapor, acid gas) respirator, but it certainly is better than nothing!

Thanks Ray. Getting them to wear what they need can me a daunting task at times. Since they are seldom on a roof in the midst of heavy fumes, they will wear these in the heat w/o complaint and since 3M says they are good for SH. The more confined they will wear100% filtration.

BTW: After posting I called 3M to make sure I was doing the right thing and since we are not in confined spaces they said these masks would do the trick.
